Computer-aided manufacturing

Objectives The student is expected to acquire a basic knowledge and understanding of computer-aided manufacturing.

Synopsis Introduction to computer-integrated manufacturing (CIM). Role of computers in CIM. Overview of materials used in manufacturing and computer-aided materials selection. Overview of manufacturing processes. Introduction to CAD and CAM systems, APT programming language, APT programming statements, additional features in APT part geometry, APT programming design. Programmable machines used in manufacturing. Flexible manufacturing cells and systems using computer control. Industrial robotics, robot economics, group technology, implementation of CAD/CAM systems.

Assessment Examination (3 hours): 60% + Practical work/Laboratory work: 40%
