Objectives The student is expected to acquire a basic knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals related to materials handling techniques and robotics.
Synopsis Introduction to automated materials handling and robotics. Mechanisation of parts handling, parts feeding and transfer mechanisms, automated production and assembly. Fixed automation systems: flow line, group technology. Flexible manufacturing system. Robotics: basic components and functions of robots, type and capabilities of commercially available robots, direct and reverse kinetics for object manipulation and control of robots and brief introduction to a control language.
Assessment Examination (3 hours): 70% + Tests and assignments: 30%
