Industrial seminar

4 points + 5 lecture hours, 34 hours seminars/visits + Second semester + Caulfield

Objectives To familiarise students with industry by visits to manufacturers, reading and targeted investigations.

Synopsis Introduction to essential issues in manufacturing, eg workforce issues, competitiveness, advanced manufacturing technology, health and safety and quality concepts. Visits are made to a range of factories, after which students make presentations and reports. A range of operations is considered, eg plastics manufacture, aircraft technology, continuous processes, packaging, printing technology, metals manufacture, motor vehicle and components industries. A student chosen industry assessment forms the major assignment.

Assessment Examination (2 hours) or essay: 40% + Seminar participation/Assignments: 60%
