Objectives This subject introduces the student to the concept of quantisation.

Synopsis Blackbody radiation and Planck's hypothesis, photoelectric effect, Compton effect, atomic spectra, Bohr's model of the hydrogen atom, wave-particle duality, lasers, de Broglie waves, electron diffraction, the uncertainty principle, electron microscopes, structure of the nucleus, radioactivity, radioactive decay law, fission and fusion, the quantum model of the hydrogen atom, quantum numbers, exclusion principle, band theory of solids, conduction in metals, insulators and semiconductors, semiconductor devices.

Assessment Examination (2 hours): 75% + Laboratory work: 25%
