Objectives Design is a complex activity encompassing input from a wide range of disciplines. The main objectives of this course are to develop confidence in undertaking all aspects of the design of a manufactured product in a group environment and in understanding and using computers in engineering design.

Synopsis Market analysis: matrix, parametric and need analysis. Product design specification: performance criteria, price, maintenance, shipping, industrial design, aesthetics and appearance. Materials selection, processing and testing. Quality and reliability. Cost, sales and marketing. Computer-aided drawing and manufacture using professional packages. Computer numerical control and robotics; automation of design using expert systems, neural networks etc. Flexible manufacturing.
