Electrical and magnetic materials
4 points + 2 lectures per week plus tutorials + First semester + Clayton +
Corequisites: MTE3502
Objectives To develop an understanding of the basis of the electrical
and magnetic properties of materials, sufficient to allow the sensible choice
of materials appropriate to different engineering applications.
Synopsis Electrical conductivity and semiconductivity: free electron and
band theory. Intrinsic and extrinsic semiconductors, transistor and integrated
circuit manufacture, optoelectric devices. Dielectrics: harmonic and Debye
models of polarisation and loss, optical fibres, dielectric breakdown.
Ferroelectrics, piezoelectricity. Magnetic behaviour, domain wall motion and
pinning, single domain particles. Hard and soft magnetic materials.
