Productivity measurement and control

Objectives To introduce current concepts of productivity measurement and control and to develop a theoretical basis for such systems. Practical and potential applications will be investigated.

Synopsis Current types of measurement and control systems, their advantages and short-comings. Newer forms of productivity measurement and control systems. Resource accounting and activity-based costing explained. The definition, accuracy and usefulness of measures of resource productivity and performance. The measurement of the effects of major technological change within an organisation and the planning of future developments. The identification of new areas of potential productivity improvement. The costs and benefits of major productivity improvement initiatives such as JIT/TQM and BPR (business process re-engineering).

Assessment Tests and assignments: 50% + Examination: 50%
