Objectives Develop skills and understanding of the approaches and methods used in engineering applications of thermodynamics and heat transfer.

Synopsis Reversible work, availability and irreversibility. Vapour power plant: Carnot, Rankine, reheat and regenerative cycles, effect of variables on plant performance, combined power and process heating plant. Modern thermal power station practice. Compressible flow, one dimensional compressible flow, sonic velocity, Mach number, convergent nozzles, critical pressure ratio, convergent/divergent nozzles. Numerical solution applied to unsteady flow processes. Steady and unsteady state conduction, extended surfaces, numerical solution to two-dimensional conduction problems. Dimensional analysis applied to forced and natural convection. Heat transfer during condensation and evaporation. Heat exchangers: overall heat transfer coefficient, log mean temperature difference, heat exchanger effectiveness, rational design procedure for shell and tube exchangers.

Assessment Examination (3 hours): 70% + Laboratory work, a 1-hour test, tutorial: 30%
