Expert systems in mechanical engineering

Objectives To develop (a) a basic understanding the technology of expert systems, (b) a working knowledge of current expert systems development shells/programs and (c) skills in building and testing mechanical engineering expert systems.

Synopsis Knowledge representation in expert systems. Reasoning under uncertainty. Expert system tools. In-house development. Designing and building an expert system. Expertise transfer for expert system design. Testing and evaluating an expert system. Difficulties with expert system development. The future of expert systems.

Assessment Examination (3 hours): 70% + Assignment: 30%
