Mechanical vibrations

Objectives To develop an appreciation of the role of vibration in machines and structures in the engineering world; an understanding of the procedures required to evaluate a vibration problem; an understanding of the concept of degrees of freedom and its use in defining a model and solutions to a model; an appreciation of energy methods in contrast to Newton's laws of motion for setting up a model; an appreciation of the various solution methods for single and multidegree of freedom systems; the understanding that vibrations affects people; wisdom in the use of the Bode diagram for solution of vibration problems.

Synopsis Undamped and damped free vibration. Energy and Rayleigh's method. Viscous damping. Logarithmic decrement. Forced vibration, impedance and Bode diagram. Resonance, vibration isolation, reciprocating and rotating unbalance. Whirling of rotating shafts. Fourier analysis, impulse function and convolution integral. Systems with two degrees of freedom, normal modes, principal coordinates, vibration absorbers, forced and free response. Continuous systems, string, longitudinal, torsional and transverse vibration of beams. Lagranges equations and applications. Human effects.

Assessment Examinations: 75% + Laboratory and tutorials: 25%
