Engineering mechanics

4 points + 24 lecture hours, 20 laboratory hours + First/Second semester + Clayton

Objectives To become familiar with and competent in analysing the kinematic behaviour of a range of basic mechanical systems such as planar linkages, spring-mass systems, crank-slider mechanisms and geared systems.

Synopsis Mechanical systems, units, dimensional analysis, modelling, curve fitting, coordinates and constraints, spring-mass systems, 4-bar linkages, slider-crank mechanisms, graphical kinematics, meshing profiles, simple and compound gear systems including epicyclic gear trains, applications in mechanical engineering.

Assessment Final examination: 70% + Class test: 20% + Laboratory and tutorials: 10%
