Objectives Mastery of mathematical concepts and methods pertaining to numerical integration, applications of integration, differential equations, vectors, partial differentiation, series, matrices and linear algebra and their application to engineering problems.
Synopsis Application of definite integrals to volumes, arc lengths, surface areas. Numerical integration: trapezium and Simpson's rules. Vector algebra and vector calculus. Partial differentiation and applications to small increments and errors, maxima and minima, least squares curve fitting. Matrices and determinants: matrix algebra, sets of simultaneous equations, linear transformations, eigenvalues and eigenvectors. Maclaurin series. Series: convergence, power series and applications. First-order differential equations by integrating factor and by separation of variables, applications. Second-order differential equations: solution of homogeneous and non-homogeneous linear equations with constant coefficients, applications.
