Automation and manufacturing systems

4 points + 26 lecture hours, 26 laboratory/project hours + First semester + Caulfield

Objectives The student is expected to acquire a basic knowledge and understanding of fundamentals of automation and machines used in manufacturing systems.

Synopsis A nominal four hours per week of lectures, tutorials and laboratory work and minor project assignments. Fundamental concepts in industrial automation; kinematics - object location, position velocity, and dynamics to control automated machineries; FMS hierarchical computer network and controls; analysis of products for selecting production techniques and machine tools; automated material handling and storage; automated inspection and storage; control system for FMS; integration of MRPII, JIT, simulation and animation tools.

Assessment Class test: 10% + Tutorials/Laboratory work/Minor projects: 40% + Examination: 50%
