Finite element applications

Objectives The student is expected to acquire a knowledge and understanding of various aspects of finite element applications. The student is expected to have the ability to perform finite element stress analysis tasks and to apply the tasks in design situations.

Synopsis Definition and description of FEM. How the FEM works. Why study the theory of FE. Relationship between FEM and other numerical methods, elements library, types of FE, discretisation, multidisciplinary engineering field and shape functions, degrees of freedom, boundary conditions, bookkeeping operations for [K] assembly, solution of the unknown engineering field equations, applications, modelling, pre and post processing, introduction to computer assisted learning and general purpose commercial FE programs.

Assessment Examination: 70% + Assignments: 30%
