Objectives (1) To enable the student to handle advanced problems in mechanics of materials and experimental stress analysis and (2) to equip the student with some knowledge in the area of theory of plasticity and its application.
Synopsis Deflection using strain energy. Stresses in thick-walled cylinders due to internal and external pressures. Stresses in rotating discs. Contact stresses. Experimental stress analysis including strain gauging and photo-elasticity. Inelastic bending and torsion. Residual stresses. Plasticity of metals with application including evaluations of forces required in some applications such as rolling of metal strips, extrusion, tube sinking, etc.
