Soil mechanics I

Objectives The student is expected to gain knowledge and understanding of the fundamental principles of soil mechanics, soil consolidation and soil compaction. The student is expected to develop an understanding of concepts of active and passive earth pressure and their application in design and concepts of foundation analysis and design.

Synopsis Compressibility of soil, settlement, soil compaction, lateral earth pressure, retaining wall, bracing of excavations, sheet pile, geomembrane, subsurface exploration and sampling, soil bearing capacity of shallow and deep foundations, settlement of foundations.

Assessment Examination: 65% + Assignments, seminar, class tests and laboratory work: 35%
