Circuits and electromagnetic fields

Objectives The student is expected to gain basic knowledge and understanding of transform and polyphase technique of network analysis and of the fundamental laws defining electrostatic and electromagnetic systems.

Synopsis Application of differential equations and Laplace transform, Heaviside and convolution techniques to circuit modelling and analysis, transfer function representation. Fourier series representation and analysis, harmonic spectra, Fourier and discrete Fourier transforms. Polyphase systems; balanced and unbalanced, 3 or 4 wires, star or delta connected systems. Star-delta transformations. Complex power and power measurement. Electric and magnetic fields: characteristics and analysis of fields and materials. Faraday's, Lenz's, Gauss's and Coulomb's laws, magnetic and electrostatic induction and forces, inductance and capacitance. Maxwell's equations. Transmission line analysis.

Assessment Examination: 70% + Laboratory sessions and assignments: 30%
