Measurement and instrumentation

4.5 points + 39 lecture hours, 26 laboratory/tutorial hours + First semester + Gippsland/Distance + Prerequisite: GEG1503

Objectives The student is expected to understand the use of transducers, analog and digital meters in instrumentation. The student is expected to develop skills in analysing and interpreting data, use of oscilloscopes and treating and minimising errors in an experiment.

Synopsis Systems of engineering units, conversion of units, types of errors and statistical analysis of errors, study characteristics of analog movements, errors due to waveform and loading, principle of operation of digital meters and signal processing, types of transducers, electrostatic and electromagnetic interference. Brief introduction to data acquisition systems.

Assessment Examination: 70% + Practicals: 20% + Assignments: 10%
