Objectives To develop an understanding of the theory and methodology underlying quantitative analysis and modelling of environmental processes and to apply such theory to practical problems to predict system behaviour.
Synopsis Principles of mass and energy conservation for steady-state analysis, design and operation of environmental systems, process plant and equipment; material and energy balance computation procedures; steady and unsteady mass balances for non-reacting systems. Reacting systems, homogenous reaction kinetics, temperature and pressure effects, analysis of single and multiple ideal reactors. Examples to be derived from global air, water and soil systems as well as specific processes. Laboratory exercises, experiments, problem solving sessions using computers, plant visit.
Assessment Examination: 80% + Laboratory work: 20%
