Objectives To develop a sustainability ethic through understanding of the range, magnitude and different perspective of environmental issues; to begin to integrate environmental criteria into project work and through this learn to integrate conflicting viewpoints regarding environmental issues.
Synopsis Initial series of lectures will provide framework of sustainable development, population and economic growth, industrialisation and urbanisation, energy demand and usage, human environmental disturbance. The course will include one or two topical environmental case studies designed to expose students to a range of major environmental issues, conflicts and ethics. Each case study may run for a number of sessions with presentations from government, engineering consultants, media, conservation, union and community organisations. Environmental ethics and the role of the engineer will be covered after the case studies.
Assessment Group project: 50% + Tutorial presentations: 15% + Examination: 35%
