Objectives An appreciation of one methodology available in developing large engineering software systems, an overview of a mid-range computer aided drafting package, its range of commands, and the requirements of a work station, and the role of the PC compatible from its design decisions in the past to hardware and software available at the present.
Synopsis Software engineering. Program maintainability, modifiability, documentation. Structured analysis of data, data flow diagrams, data dictionary structured English, top down design. Structured design, transform analysis, transaction analysis. Contemporary developments. PC hardware and software selection and specification. Memory management. Bus systems. Computer-aided drafting. Use of CAD package, eg AutoCAD, drawing, editing, display control, drawing interchange protocols. CAD peripherals, digitiser, mouse, plotter, graphics hardware. Workstation requirements, standards, bandwidth, resolution, video modes.
Assessment Examinations in software engineering, contemporary developments and computer-aided drafting: 25% each + Assignment: 25%
