Objectives Understanding the properties and application of programmable logic controllers. Familiarity with the physical phenomena utilised in sensors and transducers. Use of operational amplifiers in signal conditioning circuits for various sensor devices. Usage of filters to remove undesired frequency components from sensor signals.

Synopsis Computer interfacing. The programmable logic controller, its facilities and limitations. Internal operation of the CPU and I/O modules. Introduction to various aspects of analog, digital and hybrid electronics systems supported by transducers and actuators covering a diverse range of engineering applications implemented by the use of programmable logic controllers. Analog to digital converters and their usage in interfacing analog signals to digital systems. The properties and characteristics of various types of transducers and actuators.

Assessment Examination (2 hours): 50% + Practical work, laboratory work and assignments: 50%
