Objectives A knowledge of the types of engineering materials available and the major differences in mechanical properties existing between them.
Synopsis Structure of matter, the periodic table, primary and secondary and bonding. Metallic grain structure, solidification, solid solutions. Structure of metals, polymers. Mechanical properties including fracture toughness. Cambridge material property graphs, Sandwich beams, design of. Structure of iron carbon alloys, simplified iron carbon phase diagram and steel heat treatment. Polymerisation concepts, degradation and flammability. Structure, property, relationships of polymers. Influence of defects, environment and strain rate on failure mechanisms.
Assessment Laboratory and tutorial work: 30% + Examination (3 hours): 70%
