Objectives Extension of understanding and knowledge of electronics into specialist areas. Understanding of various methodologies and conceptual approaches as applied to engineering design. Working in a design group as a means of achieving goals and objectives beyond the capabilities of any one member of the group.
Synopsis Introduction to various aspects of analog, digital and hybrid design supported by design assignments covering a diverse range of applications. Review of basic principles and their application to engineering design. Use of electronic design automation (EDA) tools to simulate, modify, optimise and enhance designs, produce documentation and automate some parts of the design using VHDL for functional circuit synthesis. Curiosity as a tool for better design.
Assessment Practical work, laboratory work and seminar presentation: 70% + Class test: 30%
