Objectives The student will achieve an understanding of the application of power semiconductor converter technology in the areas of industrial control, telecommunications and computer systems.

Synopsis Resonant power converters, PWM inverters, voltage-source and current-source inverters. Cycloconverters. Variable-frequency inverter drives for AC machine control, vector-controlled drives. Stepper motor control. Four-quadrant phase-controlled DC machine drives, chopper control of DC motors, brushless DC machines. Harmonics in machine drive systems. Power converter technology in computing systems. Computer uninterruptible power supplies. Switch-mode power conversion in telecommunications.

Assessment Examination (3 hours): 60% + Practical work, laboratory and project work: 40%
