Objectives Knowledge of solid state devices, characteristics and circuit applications.

Synopsis Semiconductors: crystalline solids and energy bands, thermal excitation, charge generation and recombination, doping concentrations, diffusion and drift, current flow, contact potential, pn junction characteristics. Two-terminal devices: semiconductor diodes and models. Varactor diodes, tunnel diodes, photodiodes, light emitting diodes, PIN diodes, Schottky diodes, photodiodes. Clipping circuits, clamping circuits. Rectifying diodes, zener diodes, power supplies. Three-terminal devices: construction, operation and characteristics of bipolar junction transistors (BJTs) and field effect transistors (FETs).

Assessment Examination (3 hours): 80% + Practical work and laboratory work: 20%
