Linear systems I

3 points + 26 lecture/tutorial hours, 13 laboratory hours + First semester + Caulfield + Prerequisites: ENC1202 + Corequisites: MAC2901

Objectives To introduce students to techniques for the analysis of linear systems in continuous time. On completion of this subject students will be expected to have gained an understanding of basic systems and signal analysis procedures, and be able to apply these techniques to the analysis of simple systems as they arise in applications in electrical networks, control, communications and signal processing.

Synopsis Review of complex numbers. Introduction to signals: representations and classifications. Introduction to systems: mathematical models, system classification. Convolution: representation of signals using impulses; system impulse response and the convolution integral. Fourier series: representation of periodic signals; mean and root mean square values; harmonics. Fourier transform: properties; system function; ideal filters; energy spectrum. Laplace transform: properties; solution of differential equations; transfer function; frequency response. Applications in electrical networks, control communications and signal processing.

Assessment Examination (3 hours): 80% + Assignments and practical work: 20%
