Objectives To develop the knowledge and understanding of the nature of expert systems as part of artificial intelligence and knowledge based systems; an appreciation of the strengths and weaknesses of expert systems applications to engineering and other knowledge-rich fields; an awareness of the need, appropriateness, suitable methodology and advantages of expert system application.

Synopsis Definition, need and scope of expert systems; structure and components of an expert system; organisation of knowledge base; propositional logic and resolution; treatment of uncertainty; design and implementation of an expert system using an expert system building tool; review and reporting of literature.
