Objectives The student is expected to develop an appreciation of biomedical technology design including aspects such as safety and effectiveness, cost, reliability and maintainability.
Synopsis This subject deals with a wide range of design issues including conceptual design, manufacture, evaluation, operability, maintainability, reliability, problem investigation, support, disposal and lifecycle costs. Students will be exposed to the detailed design analysis of a range of commercially manufactured medical equipment and will attend seminars given by biomedical equipment designers. Each student will produce a report documenting the general design principles that he or she has found important in the design of a specific item of biomedical equipment.
