Objectives The student is expected to develop an understanding of the mathematical basis and unifying computational philosophy of the projection method for solving linear operator equations which frequently arise in engineering problems. The student is also expected to acquire knowledge of the finite-element implementation of the projection method for solving field problems.
Synopsis Introduction to modern algebra. Introduction to topological vector spaces, geometrical interpretations. Linear operators and their adjoints; functionals. Projection method for solving linear operator equations; connection with variational method. Introduction to the finite element method. Sparse matrix methods.
Assessment Examination (2 hours): 70% + Practical work and assignments: 30%
