M E Khan

3 points + 16 lectures, 8 tutorials, 6 laboratory hours + Second semester + Clayton + Prerequisites: MAT2920

Objectives The student is expected to acquire a basic knowledge and understanding of probability theory and distributions relevant to reliability calculations for engineering problems and to develop the ability to establish reliability models, analyse failure statistics and perform reliability evaluations.

Synopsis Basic probability theory and applications in engineering; reliability models and evaluation of simple and complex systems; reliability calculations for stand-by, repairable and non-repairable systems; probability distributions in reliability evaluations; system reliability evaluation using probability distributions; discrete and continuous Markov chains; state space diagrams; frequency and duration techniques; approximate system reliability evaluation, systems with non-exponential distributions.

Assessment Examination (2 hours): 60% + Assignments: 30% + Laboratory work: 10%
