Switching and signalling

Objectives The student is expected to understand the telecommunication
network hierarchical configuration via the principles of multiplexing, digital
switching and signalling systems.
Synopsis Introduction to telecommunication network hierarchical
configuration; principles of multiplexing; circuit switching - space switching,
time-division switching; packet switching; digital switch architecture;
performance analysis - blocking probability, throughput, utilisation; numbering
systems; protocols and signalling systems, common channel signalling.
Assessment Examination (2 hours): 80% + Practical work: 20%
