Circuit theory III

Objectives The student is expected to acquire a knowledge and understanding of transmission line theory, discrete-time and continuous-time signals and systems, Fourier transforms, convolution, sampling and aliasing.

Synopsis Transmission-line theory: distributed-parameter networks, travelling waves in uniform transmission lines, analysis of transmission-line networks using scattering parameters, transmission-line networks under sinusoidal steady-state conditions, standing waves, impedance matching, the Smith chart. Discrete-time signals and systems: sequences, discrete-time systems, analysis by difference equations, the z-transform, system functions in the z-domain, general analysis of discrete-time systems. Fourier transforms and linear system theory: Fourier analysis of continuous-time and discrete-time signals, the impulse train and its Fourier transform, convolution in the time and frequency domains, frequency and time aliasing, Fourier series in discrete-frequency presentation, the sampling theorem.

Assessment Examination (2 hours): 80% + Assignments: 10% + Laboratory work: 10%
