Objectives This subject is designed to develop understanding and skills relating to the principles and practice of traffic engineering, land use planning and environmental engineering.
Synopsis Traffic considerations, including road user, vehicle and road characteristics. Traffic surveys: types and methods. Traffic flow theory. Capacity and level of service. Road safety. Geometric design of roads: principles, procedures, standards and their selection and application. Traffic noise and air pollution. Parking. Road furniture, signs and markings. Intersections: at-grade and grade separated. Traffic signals: theory and operation. Residential streets. Pedestrian and bicycle facilities. Local area traffic management. Transport planning: principles, processes and procedures. Land use planning: history, legislation, land uses, preservation, conservation. Environmental considerations, assessment, evaluation, effects statements.
Assessment Examination (3 hours): 80% + Practical work/Assignments: 20%
