4 points + 26 lecture hours, 26 tutorial and laboratory hours + First semester + Caulfield + Prerequisites: CVE3142

Objectives The student is expected to gain an understanding of the mechanisms of slope and retaining wall performance and the strategies and techniques of site investigation; the ability to evaluate the stability of simple geotechnical structures; the ability to analyse geophysical surveys and interpret geological maps and air photos; insight on the geotechnical environment.

Synopsis Retaining wall and soil slope performance and evaluation, earth and rockfill dams. Site investigation planning, execution and interpretation including mechanical and geophysical methods. Data analysis; remote sensing, stereoscopic projection. Rock slope analysis and stabilisation.

Assessment Examination (3 hours): 80% + Assignments: 20%
