3 points + 13 lecture hours, 26 tutorial hours + First semester + Caulfield + Prerequisites: ENC3012

Objectives On completion of this subject, the students should be able to carry out manual designs of steel structures using elastic method. Emphasis is placed on the use of the Australian Steel Code AS4100-1990 as well as the background information leading to the formulation of the clauses in AS4100.

Synopsis Introduction to steel design: methods of analysis, general design considerations, limit state approach in comparison with working stress design and ultimate load design, forms of construction. General members: amplification factor and strength capacity, equivalent moment, end restraints, P-delta effect, braced and sway members. Design of members subject to bending: local buckling and lateral-torsional buckling; compact, non-compact and slender sections; lateral restraints, effective length; design of web. Design of members subject to compression: form factor, slenderness reduction factor, effective length. Design of members subject to combined actions: axial and bending, bi-axial bending. Design of connections: bolt group and weld group. Design of members subject to axial tension. Design of multistorey buildings.

Assessment Examination (3 hours): 70% + Assignments: 30%
