Objectives The student is expected to develop skills in critical and innovative thinking in conceptual design, a feel for the appropriateness of the proposed design solution and a culture of paying attention to details and design practicability.
Synopsis This subject is structured to provide students with experience in engineering design and tendering in all disciplines of civil engineering. Students are required to work individually or as a member of a team (depending on the design unit offered). Two design units will be offered, each lasting six weeks, with the first unit being one of preparing a tender in a design and construct contract. Students are exposed to value management in developing design options in a workshop environment. The second unit would involve the detail design of one component of the tender. The design components will be based on the following themes: concrete structures, transport engineering, urban drainage, steel structures, geotechnical engineering, public health engineering, timber structures.
Assessment Based on submitted documentation of the design carried out. Students may be required to present their design in the form of a seminar or to undertake an oral examination to demonstrate their knowledge of and individual input to the designs. Students are required to pass both design units to pass the subject.
