Geology and soil mechanics

Objectives The student is expected to acquire a basic knowledge and understanding of geological concepts, earth materials, the processes which form the earth's near surface features, soil index properties and the influence of the component phases of a soil on the mechanical behaviour of the material.

Synopsis Geology: basic geological concepts. Properties and determinative mineralogy of the rock-forming minerals. Petrology of common rocks. Tectonics and structural geology. Geomorphology. Remote sensing. Geological maps. Soil mechanics: nature of soil, clay mineralogy, effective stress, pore pressure, seepage, permeability, flow nets.

Assessment Written (6000 words): 20% + Examination (3 hours): 80%
