Objectives To develop an appreciation of the major hazards and risks in offshore engineering with special reference to oil and gas production; to develop skills in quantified risk assessment and risk management.

Synopsis Overview of risks, losses and hazards in development and production. Implications of Piper Alpha and Alexander Keilland disasters. Risk analysis methods: fault tree and event tree, HAZOP studies, vessel collision. The safety case. Structural reliability: systems, redundancy, environmental and operating loads, resistance assessment, residual strength after damage. Time dependent reliability: Bayesian updating, corrosion, fatigue life, remaining life. Inspection and monitoring.

Assessment Examination (3 hours): 50% + Assignments and seminars: 50%
