6 points + 26 lectures, 4 tutorials, 9 computer laboratory classes + First semester + Clayton

Objectives The students are expected to enhance their knowledge, make critical observations, apply the acquired knowledge and develop skills related to the analysis and design of earth retaining structures. The student should gain an appreciation of the relevance of advanced foundation engineering theory and design to engineering practice, gain skills in using retaining structure computer software and develop confidence to tackle new engineering problems, particularly in the design environment.

Synopsis Methods of analysis and design for a range of earth retaining structures including reinforced concrete mass and cantilever walls, crib walls, sheetpile and diaphragm walls - cantilever or tiedback/strutted, temporary excavations, reinforced - earth walls, novel retaining structures, computer analyses.

Assessment Examination (3 hours): 60% + Practical work: 40%
