Objectives To develop a willingness and ability to collaborate effectively with architects in the design of structures whilst arguing persuasively the case for engineering logic.
Synopsis Review of history of twentieth century architecture. Ideals of the modern movement and current developments of and reactions to them. Review of persistent themes such as rationalism and functionalism. Impact of these ideals on the work of the structural engineer. Relationship between the architect and engineer. Case studies.
Assessment Written (2000 words): 20% + Examinations (3 hours): 80%
