Objectives The student is expected to acquire a knowledge of advanced analysis techniques related to the behaviour of structures, in particular to static analyses, dynamic analyses and stability analyses. The student is expected to understand the mathematical processes related to these techniques, in particular, matrix methods, numerical integration methods and eigen extractions.
Synopsis Matrix analysis of structural systems involving basic finite truss, beam and frame elements in two and three dimensions; derivation and use of non-prismatic element stiffness matrices; data storage and computer analysis verification. Dynamics of structural response, free and forced vibration; elasto-plastic response; impulses; earthquake; Duhamel integral; step by step integration; multi-mass system eigen value solution. Introduction to structural stability; classical derivation of bifurcation load, buckling of elastic columns, effective length; frame stability; buckling programs, column design curves and web buckling.
