R Al-Mahaidi

3 points + 26 lectures, 12 tutorials, 1 laboratory class + First semester + Clayton + Prerequisites: CIV2260

Objectives The student is expected to develop an understanding of the behaviour of reinforced concrete members and structures and to acquire basic professional skills in the design and detailing of reinforced concrete structural elements for strength and serviceability.

Synopsis Review of flexural strength design of beams. Shear design: shear resistance mechanisms, design and detailing of shear reinforcement. Bond and development length; curtailment of reinforcement. Continuous beams: moment and shear envelopes, simplified method of analysis. Design for serviceability: concept of tension stiffening and effective moment of inertia, calculation of deflections, deemed to comply span-to-depth ratios, control of cracking. Design for durability and fire resistance. RC slab systems: design of one-way slabs, behaviour and design of two-way edge supported slabs and flat slabs. Columns: behaviour of RC columns, calculation of ultimate strength, interaction curves. Design of tied and spiral columns. Slenderness effects: design of slender columns by moment magnifier method. Types of foundations, design of isolated footings.
