Design of structures

4 points + 26 tutorials + Second semester + Clayton + Prerequisites:

Objectives A knowledge of the criteria governing design of structures
and of steel and concrete as construction materials. An understanding of the
behaviour of basic steel and concrete members. An ability to choose appropriate
sizes for simple members in steel and concrete and bolt and weld sizes for
simple connections in steel.
Synopsis General: structural systems and loads; limit-state design
philosophy. Steel: tension members; laterally supported beams; axially-loaded
columns; connections. Reinforced concrete: properties of concrete and
reinforcement; service load behaviour; ultimate flexural strength of
rectangular beams, tee beams, and slabs.
Assessment Examinations (3 hours): 80% + Practical work: 20%
