Stress and structural analysis

G Taplin

4 points + 26 lectures, 12 tutorials, 4 laboratory classes + First and second semester + Clayton + Prerequisites: CIV1210

Objectives An understanding of the principles of equilibrium, compatibility and constitutive relationships in elastic continuous mediums and structures with uni-dimensional members. Ability to analyse simple situations of stress and strain, continuous beams and simple frames.

Synopsis Normal and shear stress. Stress and strain at a point. Mohr's circle. Use of strain gauges. Hooke's Law. Theory of elasticity. Superposition. Failure theories based on yield. Stresses due to axial, shear and flexural actions. Torsion of circular shafts. Moment area method. Analysis of simple statically indeterminate structures by the flexibility method and by the stiffness (slope deflection) and moment distribution methods. Sway of rectangular frames. Buckling of columns with initial imperfections.

Assessment Examination (3 hours): 75% + Laboratory and assignments: 25%
