4 points + 26 lectures, 8 tutorials, 18 laboratory hours + Second semester + Clayton + Prerequisites: VCE Chemistry or CHM1700

Objectives To complement the knowledge gained in CHM1710 (Chemistry I), especially in the areas of inorganic and organic chemistry. As much as possible at this stage the course will be pointed towards industrial processes.

Synopsis Topics covered in inorganic chemistry: bonding and molecular shapes, redox reactions, metal chemistry, non-metal chemistry, roasting and smelting, electrochemical purification/isolation, coordination chemistry, industrial processes, application of redox, group separation, complexation and electrochemistry. Topics covered in organic chemistry: chemistry upon which the preparation of many industrial processes is based; material divided according to carbon number of chemicals, eg `C1 chemistry' discusses methane, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and their conversion to methanol etc, new chemical reactions, polymer chemistry, hazardous nature of chemicals.

Assessment Examinations (2.5 hours): 80% + Laboratory work: 20%
