Objectives To demonstrate an understanding of the chemical principles needed to begin CHM1710 and to be able to apply these in both real world and laboratory situations.

Synopsis Electronic configuration, stoichiometry, bonding and properties of solids, gas laws, chemical equilibrium, types of chemical reactions, electrochemistry, thermochemistry, chromatography, introduction to organic chemistry, polymers.

Assessment Examination: 50% + Practical work: 30% + Assignment: 10% + Class contributions: 10% + Students must pass the practical component to pass the subject
