Objectives The student is expected to acquire knowledge of some of the key environmental issues and their consequences which impact on chemical engineering practice; and, in particular, of the emission of greenhouse and other pollutant gases and water quality and wastewater treatment issues.
Synopsis Environmental issues driving change in chemical engineering practice. Greenhouse gas emissions and their consequences. Major air pollutants, sources, effects and fate. Meteorology and the dispersion of gaseous emissions. Alleviation of air pollution problems. Noise pollution. Examination of water and wastewater; chemical, physical and microbiological tests; Australian drinking water guidelines. Wastewater treatment processes; activated sludge, trickling filtration, anaerobic digestion.
