Industrial chemistry

4 points + 26 lectures, 3 plant visits+ Second semester + Clayton + Prerequisites: VCE Chemistry or CHM1700

Objectives The student is expected to acquire a basic knowledge and understanding of the scope of the Australian process industries; the application of chemical principles to selected industrial processes; occupational health and safety; fundamentals of technical safety; the scope of environmental management and specific methods of waste treatment; the general layout and operating characteristics of selected operating plants; energy conservation in the process industries; the profession of chemical engineering. The student is expected to develop skills in written communication.

Synopsis Application of chemical principles in the petroleum, petrochemical, mineral, pulp and paper, food and other renewable resource industries. Occupational health and safety. Introduction to technical safety. Waste treatment and the environment. Energy conservation in the process industries. Visits will be made to three process plants.

Assessment Examinations: 55% + Plant visit reports: 45%
