Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have a knowledge of the principles underlying the various methods of organising and controlling information for access and retrieval; be fairly competent to use commonly accepted tools for the organisation of information for storage and retrieval; have an understanding of the practicality of bibliographic databases and networks for access to information.
Synopsis This subject aims to develop in students an understanding of the nature of information and the principles underlying the various methods of organising and controlling information; a competence in the use of commonly accepted tools for access and retrieval; and an understanding of bibliographic databases and networks for access to information. Topics covered include the organisation and control of library materials; the importance of information materials in any format, print or non-print, in the library and proper organisation for their access; problems related to the organisation and control of various information materials; the effects of technological development on the organisation and control of information; the roles of bibliographic networks such as SCIS and ABN. The subject is taught by study guides, readings, lectures, videos, tutorials and hands-on experience using microfiche and computer, at weekend and vacation schools.
Assessment Three assignments: 70% + Paper or project (2000 words): 30%
